DescriptionSpecificationsQuestions & Answers
The retractable Rotring 600 ballpoint pen is a worthy companion to its drafting pencil cousin. It exudes technical style, with a simple, yet sophisticated hexagonal body that is finished with a band of decorative knurling and Rotring's iconic red circle at the top of the pen. The pen's all-metal brass body has a satisfying weight in the hand. The traditional knurled grip keeps your fingers from slipping, and the stainless steel clip fastens firmly to any pocket. The ballpoint tip extends with a convenient push-button mechanism.

I just got this for my 50th birthday, and it is the perfect pen for me. When I initially unboxed it, I noticed a rattle on the button end, and noticeable play in the tip when I tried writing with it, and there is a slight scraping feel/sound when depressing the button. My favorite ballpoint is an old Caran D'ache where the button travel is ultra-smooth (though the Goliath cartridges are awful).

I inserted a small o-ring at the tip end of the spring, and that helped with the play and rattling. The stock cartridge was pretty good, but I opted to go with a Schmidt EasyFlow 9000 refill, which is bold and alarmingly smooth.

Maybe it's old age, but complaining about this pen's shortcomings for its relatively high price gives me much enjoyment. Overall, it seems well-built and reliable, with perfect size, weight, and balance for my taste, and I always find myself reaching for it first, for work, doodling, and personal projects. I've owned its pencil counterpart for 8 years, and it just feels too nice to be a daily driver: I always worry about dropping it or losing it.

This pen is expensive enough that I'm careful with where/how it's stored, and nice enough to enjoy using, with enough idiosyncrasies to keep me engaged and entertained, thinking of improvements I could make to it.

As another reviewer pointed out there is a lot of slop in the tip of the pen (i.e. between the pen body and ink cartridge tip), such that the ink cartridge moves around slightly as you move. This bothers me while writing, though it may be mostly mental.

Having such sloppy tolerances for such an otherwise really nice feeling (and fairly expensive) pen is disappointing.

Beautiful pen.
This one is made in Japan with the highest quality machining and materials. I read some reviews that the clicker at the top rattles, yes it makes some noise when you shake the pen around but not noticeable when you are using it. I bought the Parker GEL refills and they are very smooth, with no skipping.
You will have to be careful with this pen it may go missing if left unattended!

This is a good replacement for my broken German 600 ballpoint pen (no knurling.) While the clicking mechanism feels less smooth due to the weaker spring (easily fixable) and the cap's brushed finish vs a smooth finish on the German one, the knurling and larger diameter grip make it more comfortable to use for extended writing sessions. I was initially concerned the sharper tip would poke through shirt pockets but the pen is just short enough to prevent that from happening. All in all I am quite happy with it and I use it daily. My Rotring 800 gold tip fountain pen is jealous. :-)

I just would like to point out that this is a fidgety pen. I love it. The click is soothing, and the top knurled section twists (same way as the mechanical pencil allows to display graphite hardness) it twists but it achieve nothing. It is just a pleasant twinsting section. So far I’ve had no issues with this. I’m using a very bold g2 refil, but I’m going to try something different soon. The original black ink that came with it is rather simple and has nothing special. This color is great and looks very nice. Already had 2-4 coworkers noticing what a nice pen I had. Good job.
