Herbin: The Oldest Ink Manufacturer in the World

Herbin: The Oldest Ink Manufacturer in the World

The French brand Herbin was established in 1670, and is the oldest name in ink production in the world. Jacques M. Herbin was a sailor who traveled the world during a period of exploration. On his travels to India, he discovered formulas for manufacturing sealing wax, eventually producing a special lacquer formula that improved the quality of the seals in adhesion and neatness. The wax has became popular for generations, from Louis XIV to Coco Chanel. Herbin went on to produce India inks and fountain pen inks into the 19th century. Today, Herbin inks are still made in France, with finishing touches added by hand in Paris.
